Overview

The Scratch Game Lab Camp introduces students ages with Beginner to Intermediate Scratch experience to the world of coding through video game creation. Using Scratch, students learn the basics of programming by designing and coding their very own playable game in just one day. Scratch is designed to support all levels—beginners can build simple games with step-by-step guidance, while more advanced students can explore extra features like multiple levels, timers, and power-ups. The camp emphasizes hands-on learning, guiding students as they create characters, set rules, and bring their ideas to life. By the end of the camp, every student will have built a custom game they can share and play at home.

Key Concepts

  • Scratch Programming

  • Events and Sequencing

  • Movement and Animation

  • Scorekeeping and Timers

  • Simple Conditionals (“if-then” rules)

  • Game Design Thinking (rules, goals, challenges)

Soft Skills

  • Creative Storytelling through Games

  • Problem-Solving and Debugging

  • Collaboration and Sharing Ideas

  • Confidence in Presenting Work

  • Independent and Guided Project Building

Outcomes

  • Understand and apply coding concepts like events, sequencing, and conditionals.

  • Create an interactive video game with custom characters, sounds, and challenges.

  • Progress at their own level—beginners make simple games, while advanced students add features like levels, timers, or power-ups.

  • Develop problem-solving skills by testing and debugging their own game.

  • Showcase a finished project to peers and parents at the end of camp.

  • Gain excitement and confidence in coding through a fun, game-centered project.
